Greggs the Bakers History
John Gregg, the first Greggs the Bakers owner, launched Greggs in Tyneside in 1939. In 1951, it launched its first store in Gosforth, Newcastle. After Gregg died in 1964, Ian took over the bakery with his brother Colin’s help.
Broomfield’s the Bakers (London), Bowketts the Bakers (Kent), Tooks (East Anglia), Price’s (Manchester), and Rutherglen (Glasgow) were all acquired shortly after.
Growth of Greggs the Bakers
Allied Bakeries sold the Bakers Oven chain to the firm in May 1994. With the opening of the first Greggs bakery in Birmingham in August 1999, the company renamed itself Greggs of the Midlands.
Since then, all 165 Bakers Oven stores have been rebranded as Greggs stores, allowing them to benefit from the national advertising effort. On March 5, 2011, the firm inaugurated its 1500th shop in York.
CEO Ken McMeikan was replaced in January 2013 by Punch Taverns’ Roger Whiteside. McMeikan went to Brake Bros. The firm announced 600 new outlets in November 2009. They planned to refurbish 215 outlets (12%) and introduce new goods, including pizza, by the end of the year.
In 2013, Greggs the bakers started to exit the bakery business, citing its inability to compete with supermarkets. Instead, the firm concentrated on the “food on the go” segment, which accounted for 80% of its sales.
Many of its outlets opened earlier and closed later to attract commuters, and it expanded the Greggs the Baker’s menu to match. This included removing bread and scones from numerous locations.
In August 2014, the business asked Google for assistance when a parodic phony motto referring to the firm’s consumers as “scum” was featured in Google search results as the simple company logo. A lesson in Twitter crisis management, the firm’s amusing social media reaction included a post to Google’s official Twitter account offering doughnuts in return for correcting the issue.
In 2016, Greggs relocated its headquarters from Jesmond to Quorum Business Park in Longbenton, North Tyneside. After the COVID-19 epidemic, all stores were shuttered in March 2020.
Greggs during COVID-19 Repercussions
Due to the continued disruption, Greggs had to shut all locations on March 24, 2020, laying off most staff. On April 24, 2020, Greggs announced a controlled experiment of 20 outlets in Newcastle to assess COVID-19 safety measures. Due to the quantity of news, attention was judged risky, and trials were conducted behind closed doors at unknown sites around the UK.
With all the additional precautions in place, including perspex screens, social distancing markers, and door personnel, Greggs announced that 800 new stores are coming around June 15, 2020. The firm has announced shortened trade hours and a reduced menu until further notice. Greggs plans to open all stores by the end of July 2020. In September 2020, several Greggs, the baker’s menu items, were reinstated. In November 2020, the firm said it would slash 820 employees because of the COVID-19 epidemic.

Greggs, the bakers, is an oddity in and of itself. To refresh your memory, a chain of sandwich shops in the UK is a half bakery, half sandwich shop. It is especially well-known in the north of England, where it is a prevalent location to obtain good, inexpensive food, including bakes, pasties, sausage rolls, and doughnuts.
